LA SCALA NEWS

2nd Quarter 2008 from Andrew Fentiman (603)

Summer is upon us, with the typical afternoon rain showers, but the painting of the building is almost complete and should (weather-permitting)

be finished in July. We are crossing our fingers that the hurricane season will be benign….

QUICK NEWS –

WCI has handed over management of The Colony to United Community Management Corp. in Fort Myers and you should have received a

letter and enclosures from them. Complete the Resident Information Form and mail it back to them ☼ If you haven’t done so recently, look at

the La Scala website where you’ll find lots of useful information. Thank you Jeff! ☼ There are seven decorator-ready units left, not including

those currently being finished off ☼

HOUSEKEEPING – Everyone should be aware of hurricane procedures (e-mailed to everyone). If a hurricane approaches, let the office know

if you will remain in the building ☺ As you know, front-desk security sign for letters and packages but they will not sign for sizeable shipments

or deliveries unless you have first notified (and made arrangements with) the office ☺ When returning grocery carts to the storage rooms,

please place them a few feet inside the door (and not right behind it!) ☺ The pool is set at 85 and the spa at 104, but if it rains or there is a

power surge, the temperature may vary slightly until it corrects ☺ The marble floors in the elevators and in key common areas have just been

honed and polished. Don’t carry open drinks through the hallways: coffee and wine stain the marble and are very costly to remove! ☺ It is very

time-consuming for Fetty to clean up the Recycle Rooms, so please continue to break down cardboard boxes and put them in the containers ☺ With so many contractors out of work, it is vital for you to get the proper documentation on file in the office, before any work is begun, to protect you and the Association ☺ Grills: shut off gas after use and clean up, please. The elements are costly to replace when they burn out. Trash containers now have covers to discourage raccoons from going into the trash ☺ Only park in your assigned spaces. If assistance is needed with extra parking, contact the office ☺ Remember to get your a/c units serviced (Union Complete in Bonita Springs: 800 990 9882, or whomever you prefer) twice a year; neglect can get costly! ☺ When you leave La Scala, submit the Request Form (available in the office and on the website) to the office. This is very helpful to maintain proper procedure and security for the building. E-mail or call during office hours, for last-minute requests or arrangements ☺

COLONY RECIPROCALS (LUNCH & DINNER) – From now through October, The Colony has reciprocal dining arrangements with 54 country clubs in the area. The full list can be obtained from Tammi Reyes (Concierge at The Colony) and she is the one who has to make your lunch and dinner reservations at the reciprocal clubs. Some clubs accept major credit cards; other clubs charge back to your Colony Country Club account or your Bay Club account. Telephone Tammi at (239) 390-4709. E-mail: tammireyes@wcicommunities.com. This is a fun thing to do during the off-season, trying out the food and savoring the ambience at other country clubs. Last year, Jackie and I really enjoyed doing this. All Colony owners are eligible, not just those with Country Club memberships.

LANDSCAPING UPDATE FROM ISABELLA - The goal to add more color to the landscaping is slowly being achieved. Since we have so many different shades of green, I have been working with the landscaper to add more color around the building. The color at the front signage looks great, as well as the additional shrubs that have been added beyond the new pavers at the front left entrance. The pavers add to the pristine view and both sides now look similar, since the grass has been removed. The new plantings in front of the fountain are doing well, adding further color. The addition of bougainvillea over the garage roll-up door will add more beautiful color when they start to cascade down. The blue daze is starting to peek over. Potted plants have been added around the spa.

The bougainvillea bed, across from the upper garage, is filling in and getting more color. The annual pruning of the palm trees will be conducted shortly.

SECURITY – If you give your unit key to contractors and service personnel, you are solely responsible for anything that happens in your unit; theft, vandalism, door left unlocked, water being left on, a/c units not adjusted properly, etc. Management or front-desk security personnel are always available to open up and lock up units. Keyfobs should definitely not be given out because this compromises everyone’s security in the building! It is in your interest to let management know who has a key or fob to your unit, also advising when they are expected to arrive, should they enter the building when you are not here.

RESTAURANTS - Angelina’s Ristorante is the best new local restaurant, located on the east side of U.S. 41 right opposite The Colony, at 24104 S. Tamiami Trail in Bonita Springs. It used to be Cozze and, before that, Sanibel Steakhouse, but Angelina’s is the best incarnation yet: Italian cuisine redefined. The restaurant has been completely remodeled, the wine list is extensive (they have a sommelier), and the food is delicious. If there are four of you, request a booth (private and quiet). They have valet parking. Tel: (239) 390-3187. You can view some of their excellent dishes at www.angelinasofbonitasprings.com.

For an inexpensive and quick lunch or dinner, Tijuana Flats is hard to beat. Fresh Mexican food, ordered at the counter and served at your table. They have a hot sauce bar, with a variety of exciting hot sauces. Give it a try. Again, it’s very close to us, being located in the new (southernmost) Coconut Point strip mall fronting the east side of U.S. 41 opposite The Colony, at 8350 Hospital Drive, Suite 102, Bonita Springs. Tel: (239) 948-8820. www.tijuanaflats.com.

Some of you may have already tried Bonefish Grill at 26381 S. Tamiami Trail (in the Robb & Stucky shopping mall) in Bonita Springs. Tel: (239) 390-9208. www.bonefishgrill.com. It’s great for cocktails, small plates or full meals but it gets very busy in season.

Further afield, the French Deli is worth trying, an authentic French café/restaurant on the east side of U.S. 41 in Naples, located at 3756 Tamiami Trail N. in Naples, between Pine Ridge Road and Golden Gate. Tel: (239) 261-0977.

A fun thing to do with your grand-children is take them for mini-golf at Golf Safari at 3775 Bonita Beach Road SW. Tel: (239) 947-1377. Afterwards, take them for a delicious treat to Royal Scoop for home-made ice cream. Leaving Golf Safari, head a little further west down Bonita Beach Road SW, turn left on Vanderbilt Drive and turn right on 8th Street. Royal Scoop is located at 15 8th Street, #D, Look for the line out the door! Tel: (239) 992-2000.
