LA SCALA NEWS
2nd Quarter 2005 from Andrew Fentiman (603)
ELECTION & NEW BOARD – Thank you for electing the new Board, consisting of myself (President, two-year term), John McGarvey (Treasurer, two-year term), Joseph French (Secretary, two-year term), Frank Ryan (Director, one-year term) and Shawn Rooney (Director, one-year term). We will do our utmost to justify your confidence in us and we look forward to serving you, the Members, and the Association. Please contact me at any time with any concerns, comments or questions you might have.
BOARD MEETINGS – Notice of meetings will be posted (in the Mail Room) and announced (on the website) in advance and Members may attend all meetings (except closed-door meetings between the Board and legal counsel). Every unit owner (a.k.a. Member of the condominium Association) has the right to speak and debate on the designated agenda items at all meetings of the membership, subject to Robert’s Rules Of Order (see www.rulesonline.com). Please see the accompanying extract from La Scala’s recorded Initial Rules & Regulations, entitled ‘The Right To Speak At Meetings’. Meeting minutes can be found on the website. Ahead of time, Members can suggest items to be placed on the agenda. If you suggest a topic, be prepared to introduce it or to have another Member or Board Director present it on your behalf, if you will be absent from the meeting.
2005 HURRICANE SEASON - The 2005 Atlantic Hurricane Season began on June 1st and ends on November 30th with the busiest period generally being between mid-August and mid-October. Absent owners have hopefully already let down their hurricane shutters or (if no shutters) put all outdoor furniture inside. This season is expected to be as busy as last year but let’s hope we don’t get on first name terms with any of them! If you notice any water intrusion in the building, please notify the Manager immediately. A useful website for preparedness is www.floridadisaster.org

HOUSE-KEEPING – Media Room usage procedure has been modified because some Members and guests have been careless and inconsiderate. The door is now locked and the equipment cabinet is locked. Reserve the room as usual and collect the keys from the front desk guard when the time comes. Flip the two-sided sign on the door to indicate that it is in use and return the keys to the front desk guard afterwards. Spills, undue cleanup and equipment breakages will be charged back to you ☺ Any complaints from Members must be submitted in writing to the Manager ☺ Quarterly assessments are sent out a month early as a courtesy to give you time to comply. Please do not be late with your payments! ☺ Reminders…. Please leave the Media Room and barbecues grills as you found them. Do not leave kids unsupervised in the pool. No bare feet in any of the indoor common areas. Don’t take pool towels upstairs. La Scala barbecue tools have been removed because Members were not cleaning them. Please provide your own, once again ☺ Check the expiration date on your Pelican Landing photo ID. If it’s expired, you can quickly get a new one at the PLCA Community Center during certain times. Call PLCA on (239) 947-5977 for details ☺

FUN THINGS TO DO – BOATING: On a warm sunny day, a day out boating is hard to beat. Jackie and I have tried several local boat rental outfits. One we have used several times is Extreme Boat Rentals, located at the Comfort Inn Downtown at the corner of Goodlette-Frank & U.S. 41, across the street from Tin City in Naples. All the late-model USCG equipped boats have Bimini tops, a laminated chart and built-in coolers. A 21-foot deck boat takes four couples and will cost you about $350 from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Start off with a 90-minute tour of the multi-million dollar homes on Naples Bay and in the backwater canals of Port Royal. Then zip along on a 45-minute thrill ride (obeying all speed zones, of course) down to the Isles of Capri just north of Marco Island. We always encounter dolphins and ospreys on the way. Dock at Backwater Nick’s for a waterfront seafood lunch (arriving after midday may entail a wait for a table) and then take a 25-minute ride to the tip of Keewaydin Island and join the impromptu weekend beach party there; on a sunny Saturday or Sunday, you might find over 100 boats nudged up on the sand! Call Rob at Extreme Rentals on (239) 774-0061 but make sure you book at least a week ahead (more, in season). Remember, there are boat rental locations from Sanibel to Marco and it’s fun to explore different inshore areas.
NAPLES SEGWAY TOUR: Even if you think you’ve seen and done everything in the area, you probably haven’t toured Old Naples on a Segway Human Transport, the newest innovative electric personal transporter. It’s the most fun you can have on two wheels. Brothers Rick and Russ operate Naples Water Tours (unique small-group dolphin cruises) and they also offer segway tours around the quieter areas of Crayton Cove, the city dock, the Old Naples residential district and Cambier Park. Advance reservations are essential (239/793-7529). Group size is 5 maximum, the cost is $50 per person and the tour lasts about an hour or so. It’s safe, fun and easier than riding a bicycle because the segway balances itself. You start with ten minutes of training in a safe open area and even 9 year-olds pick it up very quickly. Then off you go on quiet pathways and sidewalks, following your tour guide. Naples Water Tours is located at the Charter Club Resort on Naples Bay, at the east end of 10th Avenue South. Warning: Segways are highly addictive!
As usual, I will end by reminding you to let me know if you have news that other Members might be interested in. I am only a phone call (cell: 239/405-3455) or an e-mail (acfentiman@comcast.net) away. And keep updated by looking at www.lascalaatthecolony.com
