LA SCALA NEWS
4th Quarter 2008 from Andrew Fentiman (603)
We are currently having the nicest picture-perfect weather - cloudless blue skies, sunshine and temperatures in the high 70’s – that originally drew us all here. As we approach the holidays, almost thirty residences are occupied, which is almost a record for La Scala (the record is thirty-two).

Take your P.L. ID card to PLCA to get your copy, (1 per unit) ☺ Pelican’s Nest Golf Club welcomes us for Sunday dining, January 4 through March 29 (excluding SuperBowl Sunday), 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Call the club on (239) 947-2282. Bring your Pelican Landing ID card. Mastercard & Visa accepted ☺ As of December 1st, 942 homes have been sold in The Colony, according to WCI ☺ With a few exceptions, most of us saw our 2008 Property Tax figure reduce: this is the 3rd year of reductions ☺
HOUSEKEEPING – ☼ Please welcome Bob H. at the La Scala front desk, who works the night schedule, as does our other Bob (Jeff’s Dad) ☼ Pelican Landing patrol cars are always on the lookout for speeders and stop-sign runners, but they will be especially vigilant on Pelican Colony Boulevard over the holidays ☼ Pelican Landing Community Channel is now found on Channel 95 on your tv ☼ Styrofoam must be bagged and put down the trash chute; it is not recyclable ☼
SOCIAL – The annual Tree-Lighting Party on Friday, November 28, was a great success, with around 50 attending (residents and their guests) Ѳ The annual Happy New Year Party takes place in the Social Room on Saturday, January 17, from 6:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. An elegant evening with cocktails and dinner, with the chance to dress up for the occasion Ѳ Each year, the small Residents’ Christmas Tree is set up in the Social Room. Owners are invited to hang an ornament, which remains year after year. If you have not yet done so yet, please hang one Ѳ Interested in Mahjong? Call Shirley Besikof on 949-0756 Ѳ
COMMUNITY ROAD RULES – In Pelican Landing, and The Colony, there are rules for traffic other than cars. Here are the highlights. Walkers and joggers must use sidewalks where available. Joggers who jog in the road should face traffic. Bicyclists must be on the roadway, going in the direction with traffic, and riding single file. Rollerbladers must use the roads and rollerblade facing traffic.
2009 COMMUNITY FEES – Our 2009 community fees for the year total $3,786.52 and break down as follows: Pelican Landing Master Association: $1,542 for the year ▲ The Colony Foundation: $574.52 for the year ▲ Bay Club Fee: $1,670 for the year ▲
FIRE ALARMS - In a modern condominium high-rise, occasional fire alarms are a fact of life. Our smoke and heat-detection systems are very sensitive and false alarms can be triggered by blowing dust, chemical fumes, defective sensors and a host of other causes. In fact, the recent false alarms were caused by a defective smoke alarm in our own private elevator foyer at 603. State regulations, and building & fire department codes, mandate that the system sounds a general alarm throughout the building when an individual detector triggers. When an alarm sounds, one, or both passenger elevators, may become inoperable as well as one, or both, of the service elevators; depending on the location of the alarm source. Once the staff determines that it is a false alarm – which may take several minutes – an announcement to this effect will be made over the building’s PA system, and the staff will then reset the elevators with a special key. As soon as one or more elevators can be used, an announcement will be made, identifying the operable elevator/s. This may take several minutes more and so please be patient.
As soon as an alarm sounds, La Scala management and staff examine the main panel display at the front desk to locate the source and then they go to that location to determine whether it is a false alarm or not. Please do not call the office during this critical period to ask what is happening, tying up the office telephone line and diverting management and staff from trouble-shooting the problem! Once it is determined that the event is a false alarm, an appropriate announcement will be made via the building’s PA system. During an alarm, do not use the elevators until you receive the all-clear: only the stairs. Please do not blame management and staff for any inconvenience caused by a false alarm; it is not their fault, after all, and they work as fast as possible to rectify the situation. Your safety is much more important than any temporary inconvenience.
RESTAURANT – Although we have not been there yet, David Wong’s Pan Asian & Sushi is apparently worth the visit. Taking over Cilantro Tamales’ former location in the Prado at Spring Creek (where Steinmart and the Regal 12 movie theater are) in Bonita Springs, Wong brings his Los Angeles restaurant experience to Southwest Florida. The cuisine includes dishes from Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Korea and Japan. Tel: (239) 992-5600.
NORTH COLLIER REGIONAL PARK (SUN-N-FUN LAGOON) – A fun place to take the grandchildren, it’s open (except for Christmas Day) 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. until January 5 and then closed until the first weekend in February, after which it opens on weekends until daily summer hours start in May. It has Sun-N-Fun Lagoon Water Park, 8 tournament soccer fields, 5 tournament softball fields, RecPlex Fitness Complex, Calusa fossil dig play area for children, interactive playground, Exhibit Hall Park, Ranger tours and education. Call the park on (239) 252-4000 or the Sun-N-Fun Hotline on (239) 252-4021. www.colliergov.net/Index.aspx?page=357 The park is at 15000 Livingston Road (east side) in North Naples, just south of Veterans Memorial Boulevard.
SATURDAY FARMER’S MARKET AT THE PROMENADE – Bonita Lions Club Farmer’s Market has 4 fully stocked farm-fresh vegetable stalls plus vendors selling cut flowers, orchids, cosmetics, antique & fashion jewelry, baked goods, frozen fish, books, antiques, glassware, household items, toys, golf balls, etc. Hours of operation are 7 a.m. until noon every Saturday from January 3 until April 25.
